The conventions of a thriller genre are designed to frighten the audience by using realistic affects. Thrillers enable the audience to think as it generally has more than one storyline.
Films with the genre of Thriller are designed to fright the audience without using blood and weapons. Instead the movie will include strange noises, darkness and quick editing as this creates plenty of suspense for the viewer. Some of the things you would expect to see in a thriller are:
- Effective Camera Angles
- Effective Lighting
- Massive Mansions
- Darkness and Mist
Thrillers convey different conventions compared to a Horror as a Horror movie is based on actions that include blood and death. Horrors are slightly more simplified as they tend to have predictable story lines. Often in thrillers the beginning plot is centered around a crime. This helps to attract the audience as outcome of the disruption (crime) is much more extreme than expected.
Thrillers are designed to make a numerous amount of people feel frightened and filled with adrenaline. A thriller makes me people jump in shock whilst filled with enjoyment. Thrillers make the majority of people sweat (there palms are likely to become sweaty), it races peoples pulse as well as there heart beat and can also prevent people from sleeping during night.
Sound
The use of sound at the beginning of the opening scene of a thriller sets an ideal type of story that the audience expect to see. Sound helps to create suspense especially. An example of this is if the victim in a thriller film was exploring a massive house alone completely pitch black. You would expect to hear slow non - diegetic sound to help set the scene and have a sense of understanding of how the character may be feeling which is most likely to be (suspicious, frightened and wary). However a normal predicted scenario would be that the victim is not alone although they think they are) they are being followed and close monitored by someone who is much more dominat and probably more violent than the victim.Eventually the victim would discover that they are not aone and are likely to be chased and attacked. It is then that the tempo of the music would begin to get faster. This helps to engage the audience as it is building suspense and therefore creates audience involvement.
Non - diegetic sound is sound that has been added in post production after filming. The audience can hear this sound but the characters/ cast cannot.
